Owji Addresses GECF Meeting Iranian Minister of Petroleum Javad Owji addressed the 23rd Ministerial Meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) which was held virtually on Tuesday, 16 November 2021.

Addressing the 23rd Ministerial Meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Owji appreciated Bolivia for holding the event, and hoped that it will be able to take another step in line with materializing the goals of the Assembly by taking effective and strategic decisions, Iran"s SHANA news agency reported.

Due to the outbreak of coronavirus, the global economy and, consequently, the gas market have suffered significant damages, the effects of which will change the patterns of world energy production and consumption even in the medium term, he added.

Despite all the difficulties of the last two years, the GECF member states have been able to manage the challenges and instabilities in the gas market by adhering to the principles and goals enshrined in the Assembly"s statutes, he noted.

He referred to the key role of gas in the energy transition, saying: "Natural gas has an important and key role in the transition to a sustainable energy system with less carbon and due to the environmental and economic benefits, even despite the development of renewable energy, can be a part of the global green energy strategy to combat the effects of climate change.

Owji stated that abundant and vast resources of natural gas in Iran and other parts of the world provide public access to clean and economical energy to achieve the seventh goal of sustainable development approved by the United Nations.

He urged the world to pay attention to the common but different responsibilities of developed countries toward developing countries and prepare a good opportunity for the transition of energy in these countries.

"Technology transfer is a 50-year-old promise that still faces various difficulties, and developing countries, especially gas-exporting countries, need more of such technologies," he said.

Accordingly, constructive dialogue and cooperation with all parties, including producers and consumers, can ensure the security of supply and demand of the natural gas and ultimately benefit both parties.

"I believe that it is more necessary to promote the cooperation among GECF member states in technology, development and stability of the gas market, he reiterated.

Iran warmly welcomes any collective or bilateral cooperation with gas producing countries and will make every effort to protect the interests of gas exporters and the stability of the gas market.
