Iran seeks to improve its position among largest gas producers in the world, director of planning at National Iranian Gas Company, Hassan Montazer Torbati said.

Iran is currently the third producer of gas with 180 billion cubic meters (bcm) a year, the official said, adding this volume is expected to rise to 400 bcm by 2025, Iran’s SHANA news agency reported.
“We are still at far distance from the second producer of gas in the world,” Torbati said.
He said Iran is planning to raise its gas production by 71% by 2025.
Torbati said Iran is to bring the strength of its gas pipelines to 45,000 kilometers from the current 36,000 kilometers by 2025.
He added that Iran needs to invest $62.5 billion in its gas industry by 2025.

Iran’s state-run gas company held talks with 170 foreign companies last calendar year for gas exports, the head of the company said.
Ali-Reza Kameli, head of National Iranian Gas Exports Company (NIGEC), said the last calendar year, which started on March 21, was the first year Iran witnessed a positive gas balance, Iran’s SHANA news agency reported.
The official added that with 34 trillion cubic meters of gas reserves, Iran is the largest holder of gas in the world.
Based on Oil Ministry policies, the country's annual gas production capacity will be increased to 1 billion cubic meters (bcm) by 2019, he added.
He said Iran’s priority for gas exports are neighbors like Turkmenistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iraq.
“In the meantime, talks have been held with other Persian Gulf countries like the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman,” he said.
Kameli said negotiations over gas contracts are often lengthy.

Iran needs $100 billion to rebuild its gas industry and has met with European energy companies in this field.
“We welcome and appreciate investment by companies; we welcome new technology,” Azizollah Ramezani, international affairs director at National Iranian Gas Company told Bloomberg in an interview in Paris where he was to attend the World Gas Conference.
“During the last 18 months we have had many discussions with foreign companies.” Ramezani added.
The Iranian official said natural gas will be the main fuel in the next 20 to 30 years and will be the second most used fuel after oil.
Ramezani said Iran plans to increase gas exports seven-fold to 200 million cubic meters a day in four years. It wants to raise production to 1.2 billion cubic meters a day in five years, from 800 million now, he said.
Ramezani said Deputy Petroleum Minister Hamidreza Araqi had met with international companies on the sideline of the World Gas Conference.
“In Paris, we met a lot of companies and they were very eager to have negotiations,” Ramezani said.

Iran is able to pump natural gas to Europe via eight routes, director for international affairs of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), Azizollah Ramezani said.

“The Europeans are seeking to diversity sources of energy supply in the Green Continent and after developing new phases of South Pars gas field Iran will have good potential for enhanced gas exports and it could be connected to the European gas network via eight routes,” Ramezani said.
“For gas exports to Europe we cannot be limited to a single route or a specific pipeline and we will examine all existing options,” he said, Iran’s SHANA news agency reported.
“There are seven to eight different routes for Iran to deliver its gas to Europe. One of them is Iran-Iraq-Syria route,” he added.
Ramezani said Armenia-Georgia-Black Sea and trans-Turkey pipeline are other options.
He said Iran can supply 25 bcm to 30 bcm of gas to Europe every year.
